Vacuum Skin Packaging Machine

The Meatech MT-VSP vacuum skin packaging machine produces the premium retail packaging format for fresh beef, lamb, pork, and seafood — where a high-clarity barrier film is drawn under vacuum directly onto the product surface, conforming to its exact shape and creating a 360-degree sealed presentation with zero headspace and no visible fluid or air gap. The result is a retail pack that maximises product visibility and delivers shelf life of 14–21 days chilled — two to three times longer than standard vacuum or air-sealed packs at the same cold-chain temperature.

▌ Product Description

The Meatech MT-VSP vacuum skin packaging machine produces the premium retail packaging format for fresh beef, lamb, pork, and seafood — where a high-clarity barrier film is drawn under vacuum directly onto the product surface, conforming to its exact shape and creating a 360-degree sealed presentation with zero headspace and no visible fluid or air gap. The result is a retail pack that maximises product visibility and delivers shelf life of 14–21 days chilled — two to three times longer than standard vacuum or air-sealed packs at the same cold-chain temperature.

Skin packaging is the preferred format for high-value cuts — ribeye steaks, lamb racks, salmon portions — sold through premium supermarket fresh counters, online fresh food platforms, and hotel and restaurant supply channels, where presentation quality is a purchase driver as much as shelf life. The MT-VSP-S2 dual-station model doubles throughput by alternating between two work stations, making it suitable for volume fresh meat packing operations without requiring two separate machines.

Both models share the same German ScH vacuum pump, Mitsubishi PLC control, and modular mould system as the MT-MAP series, allowing the two machine types to be operated by the same trained operators on the same production floor.

▌ Solution Applications

Meatech Solution

Role of MT-VSP in the Line

Fresh Meat Cutting & Packing (premium tier)

MT-VSP is the premium-tier packaging option within Solution 06, positioned for operations supplying supermarket premium fresh meat sections or direct-to-consumer high-end meat subscription services. The skin pack format eliminates the fluid pooling and colour inconsistency that affects standard MAP tray packs in extended display, making it suitable for cuts where appearance is critical to price realisation.

Fresh Meat Cutting & Packing (high volume)

The MT-VSP-S2 dual-station model serves high-volume premium meat packing facilities — hotel and restaurant supply operations, premium fresh meat e-commerce — where throughput requirements exceed the capacity of a single-station machine.

▌ FAQ

Q:  What is the difference between vacuum skin packaging and standard MAP tray sealing?

A:  In MAP tray sealing (MT-MAP), the lidding film is sealed to the rim of the tray with a gas atmosphere in the headspace — the film does not contact the product. In vacuum skin packaging (MT-VSP), the skin film is heated and drawn by vacuum directly onto the product surface, conforming exactly to its shape with no headspace. The result is a visually cleaner pack — no fluid pooling, no air pockets, maximum product visibility — with longer shelf life (14–21 days vs 7–14 days for MAP) at the same chilled temperature.

Q:  Is vacuum skin packaging more expensive than MAP packaging?

A:  Per-pack material cost for skin packaging is typically 15–25% higher than MAP tray sealing, due to the premium skin film. However, for high-value cuts (ribeye, lamb rack, salmon fillet), the improved presentation enables higher retail price points that more than offset the packaging cost difference. Skin packaging is not recommended for low-margin commodity cuts where the price premium cannot be realised.

Q:  Can the MT-VSP be used alongside the MT-MAP on the same fresh meat packing line?

A:  Yes. The MT-VSP and MT-MAP use the same base tray formats and are operated by the same trained operators, making it practical to run both machines in the same facility — MT-MAP for standard retail and food-service packs, MT-VSP for premium retail and e-commerce SKUs. Both machines take product from the same upstream checkweigher and slicing line, with routing determined by the product SKU being packed.
