What a Metal Detector Actually Catches
A metal detector identifies ferrous, non-ferrous, and stainless steel contamination by detecting the disruption a metallic object causes in an electromagnetic field as product passes through. It is highly effective and low-cost for its specific purpose, but its blind spot is exactly what its name implies: it detects metal and nothing else. Bone fragments, plastic, glass, rubber, and other non-metallic foreign bodies pass through a metal detector completely undetected.
What X-Ray Inspection Catches That a Metal Detector Can't
X-ray inspection systems evaluate product based on density contrast, which means they can detect a substantially broader range of contaminants than a metal detector — bone fragments in deboned meat, glass, dense plastics, rubber, and mineral stone, in addition to metal. This makes x-ray the more comprehensive system, and increasingly the one specified by name in buyer audits for higher-risk product categories like bone-in-to-boneless meat processing, where bone fragment risk is a known concern that a metal detector simply cannot address.
Where a Metal Detector Is Still the Right Choice
X-ray systems cost significantly more than metal detectors and require more specialized operator training and maintenance. For product lines where the realistic contamination risk is genuinely limited to metal — for instance, downstream of a process with no bone-in stages and controlled packaging materials — a well-specified metal detector meeting HACCP critical control point requirements remains a legitimate, cost-appropriate choice, and remains the more common baseline requirement across many export markets.
Reading Your Buyer's Actual Specification
Before defaulting to either system, the practical first step is reading the buyer's audit specification or import requirement literally: does it name a detection method, or does it specify a contaminant category (bone, glass, dense plastic) that only x-ray can realistically address? Buyers in some markets and product categories will accept a metal detector as sufficient; others, particularly for bone-in-derived boneless products, increasingly require x-ray as a named control point, and installing the wrong system means re-purchasing equipment after a failed audit rather than before one.
